Much of the local day-to-day correspondence is hand-delivered by courier services. The Ghanaian postal service is setting up home delivery in some areas. Check with your nearest post office to see if this applies to you.

In theory, mailboxes are obtained at the post office in your area of residence, but in practice, this is virtually impossible – apply to all the post offices convenient to you. Once obtained, you will pay a rental fee for the post office box. You are legally allowed to send your mail to another person's post office box as long as you make arrangements with that person to pick up your mail. Other solutions are to apply for a Private Mailbag – you must also apply for a post office box, but you can get the Private Mailbag service before a box becomes available – or to have your mail sent to the post office Poste Restante.

Sending something via Ghana Post to and from Ghana is more reliable than in some other African countries, but we still recommend not sending anything of value through public post. There are the occasional reports of something missing or being delivered months late.

Mail sent from the Kotoka Airport Post Office often arrives in Europe and North America much faster than if mailed from other post office points but you will have to pay airport parking. Express mail and other special services may be obtained from courier companies. They all ship domestically and internationally.
